OCR: VIKING 1 AND 2 LANDER EQUIPEMENT The second unit in the landing system is the parachute, designed to slow the lander in the lower atmosphere. The parachute measures 16 meters in diameter and 29.5 meters long; it weighs 50 kilos. It is composed of two circular rings, called the disk and the belt separated by a 67-centimeter opening. The disk, the inner ring, has a surface area of 109 square meters. The parachute is attached to the lander with 48 Dacron suspension lines, 27.4 meters in length. During the final descent phase, three 18-ejector engines, providing a variable thrust of 28 to 209 kilos, slow the lander at touchdown. VIKING The Mars ground station-the lander itself-weighs 656 kilos and contains 85 kilos of monopropergol hydrazine fuel. (During landing, 58 kilos are burned, leaving 27 kilos for use on the Martian surface.) The lander's power is supplied by a pair of radioisotopic SNAP-19 generators containing 1.2 kilos of plutonium-238; these generators transform heat from the radioactive fuel into electricity.
